Mark Jerome Walters is a veterinarian, journalist, professor at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. He’s author of the book Seven Modern Plagues and How We are Causing Them. I loved this book for several reasons. It puts disease in the context of ecosystems, it puts us in nature, with animals and trees and all the life in which we evolved and that sustains us, and sees disease from that perspective. It’s also full of great stories and characters, whom we follow as they try to understand how we’ve made the messes we’re in.
