Marc Sageman is a terrorism expert and author of several books, including his most recent, Misunderstaning Terrorism and Turning to Political Violence: The Emergence of Terrorism. He has a rare combination of knowledge sets: he’s a medical doctor and psychiatrist, he’s a social scientist with sophisticated tools to analyze complex systems, he’s a former CIA officer with access to large amounts of data about terrorism, and he’s conducted in-depth interviews with many actual terrorists. In other words, he’s a guy you want to listen to on a subject that for most of us inspires fear, anger, and horrified incomprehension.
I’ve included two versions of the interview, the half-hour radio edit and the unabridged version, which is about 56 minutes.
